An ear for what a scene needs — and for what can come out
I’m Jaap Jellema, dialogue editor, sound designer and re-recording mixer in Amsterdam. Since 2007 I’ve taken 97 films, series and shorts through the edit, the ADR booth and the final mix — from Dutch drama to international co-productions.
Most of the work is dialogue. Making a performance clear without anyone hearing you do it — that is the craft, and it is where a scene is won or lost. Sound design and the mix follow from there: I would rather take a sound away than add one.
In practice: I read the script before we start, and I work towards your edit rather than around it. Reviewing is best done together, in the studio or on location — the only place you really hear a mix — but signing off remotely works too, live in the session or through Frame.io.
Background: a BA in Recording Arts and my own 5.1 Pro Tools Ultimate studio. I work in Dutch and English, on German and French productions as well, and record English-language ADR.
What I do
Dialogue editing
Production sound cut to the performance: cleaned, matched across takes, and handed over so the mix still has room to move. Noise reduction and dialogue repair where the location worked against you.
ADR and voice-over
Recording and directing actors in the studio, then placing it back until you stop hearing it. Dutch and English, voice-over and narration, with the director listening in live if that suits the schedule better.
Sound design
Atmospheres, effects and the sounds a scene needs but the shooting day never gave you. Built on the edit — for animation, commercials and documentary as well.
Mixing and mastering
Final mix in 5.1, 7.1, Dolby Atmos and stereo, for cinema, broadcast and streaming. Stems and M&E, EBU R128 for broadcast, DCP-ready for the room, platform spec for streaming.

Questions that come up
What do you need from me to start?
The title, the format and when you need it. Beyond that: the script — I read it before we start — and the edit with the production sound in it, whether or not picture lock is in place.
Can a director sign off remotely?
Yes, live in the session, with interim reviews through Frame.io. My preference is still together in the studio or on location: you only really hear a mix in the room it is meant for.
Which formats and specs do you deliver?
5.1, 7.1, Dolby Atmos and stereo. Stems and M&E as standard, EBU R128 for broadcast, DCP-ready for cinema and platform spec for streaming.
Which languages do you work in?
Dutch and English, including English-language ADR. I have also worked on German and French productions; for those languages I work with the director or a language coach in the studio.
Do you take on shorter productions?
Yes: documentary, short film, animation, commercials and podcast, alongside features and drama series. A short job is often one or two days in the diary.
How far ahead should I book?
